Background
Ecopave Australia family asphalt bitumen history dates back to 1927 in Helsinki Finland where their Grandfather Werner Peltonen and his cousin Leppanen, started a mastic asphalt company called Asfalttiliike Peltonen Kumppanit (K:nit) (Asphalt company Peltonen and Co) which operated until 1932 when Werner began Asfaltti Oy Peltonen and K:nit (asphalt Pty Ltd Peltonen and Co) with his brother Einar.
The company operated until 1950 when the two brothers decided to go their own ways and setup their independent mastic asphalt manufacturing operations.
Einar established Suomen Asfaltti Oy [Finnish Asphalt Pty Ltd] and Werner with his son Ensio went on to establish Laatuasfaltti Oy [Quality Asphalt Pty Ltd].
Quality asphalt went on to became one of Finlands most successful stone mastic asphalt producers renown for their quality workmanship, Quality Asphalt Pty Ltd was the first asphalt company in Scandinavia to import [SMA] Stone Mastic Asphalt Technology from Germany in 1969. Werner Peltonen unfortunately passed away in 1968 leaving behind his only son Ensio from his first marriage to Hilma Hilden and daughter Raili from his second marriage to Alma Kasanen. Raili married Yrjo Sillman both who had sons Esa and Markku. See also about Ecopave Australia.
Ensio migrated to Australia with his wife Sirkka [Wendy] and two children Eerik and Kirsi in 1971 and was later joined by his eldest son from his first marriage Sakary in 1980 to establish asphalt manufacturing operations in Melbourne.
The family realized very early on that the bitumen required to manufacture "proper" stone mastic asphalt [asphaltic concrete] and mastic asphalt suitable for roads in Australia was not possible due to the high experienced summer temperatures. In 1982 the family embarked on a mission to research and find a bitumen alternative that would be a suitable asphalt binder. Ecopave AustraliaT was established in 2002 to commercialize the GEO320T MRHT (Mastic Roller HybridT) technologies and is owned and operated today by its founding family members, Eerik Owerhall, Sakary Malmberg and Sirkka Peltonen.
